BMW 3 Series Steering Wheel Compatibility: E90, F30, G20

Three generations, three different airbag units, three sets of steering wheel controls. If you're trying to figure out which custom steering wheel fits your 3 Series, the chassis code and model year matter more than the trim level. This guide breaks it down generation by generation so you can configure with confidence.

The 3 generations of 3 Series covered: E90/E92/E93, F30/F31/F34, G20/G21

BMW's 3 Series spans three distinct platforms that are relevant to steering wheel compatibility. Each one uses a different steering wheel core, different airbag connector, and often different button layouts.

  • E90/E92/E93 (sedan, coupe, convertible) — produced roughly 2005 to 2013, depending on market and facelift.
  • F30/F31/F34 (sedan, Touring, Gran Turismo) — produced roughly 2012 to 2019, depending on facelift.
  • G20/G21 (sedan, Touring) — current generation, from around 2019 onward.

These aren't interchangeable platforms. A steering wheel built from an E92 core will not bolt onto a G20, and vice versa. NTech builds each wheel from your original steering wheel, which is why confirming your exact chassis before configuring matters more than guessing by year alone.

How to identify your chassis and model year before configuring

Your chassis code is the fastest way to confirm compatibility. You'll find it on your VIN, your registration document, or stamped near the steering column.

  • Check your VIN or registration papers — the chassis code (E90, F30, G20, etc.) is usually listed directly.
  • Look at your current steering wheel shape — round-top wheels and flat-bottom (M Sport) wheels from different generations are not interchangeable without matching the correct base.
  • Note any facelift — BMW updated electronics mid-cycle on some of these chassis, which can affect airbag connectors and button wiring. If you're unsure, send photos of your current wheel through the configurator and our team will confirm before production.

If you're not sure which generation you have, this is the step to get right before anything else. Compatibility is based on your original steering wheel, not just the model name on the car.

Original airbag conserved: what changes by generation

Across all three generations, NTech rebuilds your custom steering wheel around your original steering wheel core, keeping the original airbag conserved. What differs is the connector type and the airbag module shape itself, which is why the build has to start from your specific part.

GenerationAirbag moduleWhat NTech does
E90/E92/E93Round or M Sport airbag unit depending on trimRebuilds carbon/Alcantara shell around your original airbag conserved
F30/F31/F34Updated connector, different shape from E9xSame process, matched to F-chassis airbag housing
G20/G21Latest-generation airbag module, different again from F30Matched to G-chassis airbag housing, no substitution across platforms

There's no interchangeability promised between generations. Each build is based on the airbag unit you send in, which is also why there's no shortcut around the core exchange process — see our dedicated page on whether you need coding, an adapter, or a calculator after installation.

Paddle shifters: compatibility and fitment by model

Paddle shifters are one of the most requested options, but fitment depends on whether your original wheel already had them and which generation you're on.

  • E90/E92/E93 — paddle shifters were standard on many trims with the sport steering wheel; manual-only cars generally did not have the wiring for them.
  • F30/F31/F34 — paddle shifters are widely compatible across automatic-equipped cars, matched to your original base.
  • G20/G21 — paddle shifters follow the same logic, with a newer connector shape specific to this generation.

If your original wheel doesn't have paddle shifters, they can't simply be grafted on from another car — the wiring and column connector need to already be present. This is confirmed case by case when you submit your configuration.

Multifunction controls, cruise control, and steering wheel heating

Multifunction buttons (audio, phone, cruise control) and steering wheel heating are rebuilt using your original buttons and heating element, relocated into the new carbon or Alcantara shell.

  • Multifunction buttons — audio, voice command, and cruise control buttons are kept and reintegrated, matched to your specific layout since E90, F30, and G20 all use different button housings.
  • Steering wheel heating (Lenkradheizung) — if your original wheel is heated, the heating element is preserved and rebuilt into the new wheel. If your wheel wasn't heated from the factory, heating can't be retrofitted without the original wiring and switch already present in the car.
  • Hands-on steering wheel detection — some G20 models use capacitive sensors in the rim for driver-assist systems. If your car has this, flag it during configuration so the sensor is preserved correctly.

Special cases: already-modified wheels, original M Performance wheels

A few situations come up often enough to call out separately.

  • Already-modified steering wheel — if your wheel has been swapped, re-trimmed, or modified before, let us know during configuration. The build still starts from your actual core, so any non-original parts need to be flagged.
  • Original M Performance wheel — M Performance wheels (often flat-bottom, sometimes with a center stripe) have their own airbag and button layout even within the same generation. These are fully supported, but need to be identified as M Performance specifically, not just "sport wheel," when you configure.
  • Stolen or missing original wheel — if your original wheel was stolen along with the airbag unit (this happens, especially after a break-in), compatibility still depends on sourcing a matching original base before a custom rebuild is possible. Talk to your garage partner about next steps.

How to confirm compatibility in the NTech configurator

The configurator is built to catch mismatches before production, not after.

  • Select your 3 Series generation (E90/E92/E93, F30/F31/F34, or G20/G21) as the first step.
  • Confirm trim details: round wheel vs. flat-bottom, paddle shifters present or not, heating present or not.
  • Upload a photo of your current steering wheel — this is the fastest way for our team to confirm your exact original steering wheel before anything is built.
  • Every wheel ships with a contrôle avant départ relevé et daté, and production is backed by SGS control and a 5-year warranty.

If anything looks ambiguous, the team will flag it before production starts rather than after. FAQ

Can an E92 steering wheel be installed on an F30?

No. The E92 and F30 use different steering wheel cores and different airbag connectors. A custom wheel has to be built from your actual original steering wheel, matched to its own chassis generation.

Is the G20 steering wheel compatible with a facelifted F30?

No. G20 and F30 are separate platforms with different airbag units and column connectors, even on the latest F30 facelift. Compatibility is based on your original wheel's generation, not the model year alone.

Do I need an adapter to switch from a round wheel to a flat-bottom wheel on a 3 Series?

Not within the same generation, since the shape change is cosmetic and built from your original core. Switching electronics or connector types across generations isn't something an adapter resolves — see our page on coding, adapters, and calculators for more detail.

Is the original E90 airbag always conserved, across every configuration?

Yes. Every NTech build keeps the original airbag conserved, regardless of the finish or options you choose. The airbag module itself is never replaced or substituted.

Are paddle shifters always included?

No. Paddle shifters depend on whether your original wheel already has the wiring and column connector for them. If your original wheel has paddle shifters, they're preserved and rebuilt; if not, they can't be added without the original hardware already present in the car.

What if I'm not sure which chassis I have?

Check your VIN or registration document for the chassis code, or upload a photo of your current steering wheel in the configurator. Our team will confirm the generation and compatible options before production starts.
