Identify the right generation before you configure
On Audi A4, S4, RS4, A5, S5 and RS5, compatibility depends first on the generation and the model year. B8 and B8.5 families do not always share the same controls or the same layout as later versions.
An Audi a4 b8 steering wheel may look close to A5, S4, S5, RS4 or RS5 versions, but the paddles, spoke design, airbag shape or heating function can differ depending on the model year. That is what determines which configurator is the right one.
On newer platforms, the control interfaces change again. Before production, the match between your original base and the selected configuration needs to be checked carefully.
What changes from one generation to another
From one generation to another, the multifunction controls are not arranged in the same way. The paddles can also change in shape, length or mounting depending on the original wheel.
The shape of the central airbag also varies depending on the model year. The principle stays the same: original airbag kept means the work must start from a compatible base, without guesswork.
Some versions have a heated wheel or model-specific equipment. When that function is present on the original base, it needs to be considered from the start so the final assembly remains consistent.
What a custom rebuild keeps and what it changes
The work is carried out on the original wheel base. This keeps the interfaces intended for the vehicle, along with the integration of the original airbag and its related controls.
The changes concern grip, shape and finish. A flat-bottom profile, a centre marker, contrast stitching, and sections in Alcantara, Nappa or perforated leather can all be adjusted to suit the intended use and the look you want.
For the carbon section, the choice is between a forged appearance and a more even woven finish. The visual result is different, and it is often worth considering how it will sit with the cabin trim before confirming the build.
Materials, fitting and workshop follow-up
Alcantara gives a more matte feel and a secure grip, especially on the main hand positions. Nappa has a softer grain, while perforated leather gives the surface a more technical look.
In our workshop, each configuration is made to order. The pre-dispatch check, recorded and dated, is part of the process, along with SGS inspection and a 5-year warranty.
Fitting should be entrusted to a professional, especially for airbag removal and refitting, and for checking all functions once reassembled. If you are unsure about an option or compatibility depending on the model year, it should be confirmed before any work begins.
