Where to Install a Custom Steering Wheel | NTech

Guide4 min readNTech Performance

Your NTech steering wheel ships to you or straight to a garage. Here's exactly how the installation works, from the moment it's ready to the moment it's back on your column.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • NTech does not install steering wheels directly — fitting is handled by a garage, partner or trusted.
  • The original airbag is kept and reused on the new steering wheel for safety reasons.
  • NTech works with more than 100 partner garages to identify the closest one for installation.
  • No fixed installation duration is given since it depends on the garage's workflow and vehicle.
  • Every wheel passes a contrôle avant départ relevé et daté and contrôle SGS before shipping.

Your steering wheel is ready — now what?

Once your carbon and Alcantara steering wheel leaves our workshop, it goes to a professional for installation. NTech does not install steering wheels directly — the fitting is handled by a garage, either from our partner network or one you already trust. This keeps the technical and regulatory side of the job in the right hands.

Most customers tell us something like "I had the steering wheel fitted at" their usual mechanic, or ask us directly where the nearest installer is. Both paths work.

Why installation should be done by a professional

Your original airbag is kept and reused on the new steering wheel. That's a safety-critical part, connected to the car's electrical system. A professional knows how to disconnect the battery safely, handle the airbag module correctly, and reconnect everything — buttons, paddle shifters, heated function, vibration alert — exactly as it worked before.

  • The airbag connector has to be seated and locked correctly
  • Steering column electronics (buttons, horn, hands-on detection) need to be wired back properly
  • Torque specs on the steering wheel bolt matter
  • Any post-installation check should be done by someone who knows your car

For anything related to roadworthiness checks or insurance, your garage or local inspection body is the right point of contact — we're not in a position to make promises on that front.

Our partner garage network: how it works

NTech works with more than 100 partner garages. Here's the usual flow:

  • You tell us your location when you order, or once the steering wheel is ready
  • We identify the closest partner garage to you
  • Your garage gets in touch to set up an appointment — as we often confirm, "your garage will contact you" once everything is arranged
  • You drop off your car, the steering wheel is fitted, and you drive away

Customers who've been through it describe it simply: "professional garage, great installation." That's the goal — no surprises, no guesswork on-site.

Check our installation guide for more detail on what the process looks like step by step.

No partner garage near you? Your options

If there's no partner garage close to your location, you still have options:

  • Your usual mechanic can install the steering wheel — many customers go this route, and it works fine as long as the garage is comfortable working on airbags and steering column electronics
  • Ask us directly — if you're not sure where the nearest monteur is, contact us and we'll help you find a suitable option near you
  • Share the installation guide with your garage so they know exactly what to check before and after fitting

Whichever route you take, the steering wheel itself doesn't change — it's built around your original core, so any competent garage can work with it.

What the installer checks on receiving the wheel

Before fitting anything, a good installer runs through a short checklist:

  • Visual check that the steering wheel matches what was ordered — stitching color, material, button layout
  • Confirmation that the airbag module from your original wheel is intact and properly mounted
  • Fit check against the steering column and connectors
  • Compatibility of paddle shifters and buttons with your specific model and millésime

Every wheel leaves our workshop with a contrôle avant départ relevé et daté and has passed contrôle SGS. These checks happen before shipping — the installer's job is to confirm everything still matches once it arrives at the garage. If you're unsure whether your steering wheel needs any adapter or extra wiring work, this guide on coding, adapters and calculators covers it in plain terms.

How long does installation take

The installation itself is a standard steering wheel swap for a professional — comparable to any job involving airbag handling and column electronics. We don't give a fixed duration because it depends on your garage's workflow and your specific vehicle. Ask your garage directly when booking the appointment, and they'll give you a realistic estimate based on your car.

FAQ — installation and fitting

Can I install the steering wheel myself?

We don't recommend it. The steering wheel involves your original airbag module and column electronics — this is work for a professional who handles airbags regularly. Use a partner garage or your usual trusted mechanic.

How long does installation take at a garage?

It varies by garage and vehicle, so there's no fixed duration we can promise. Your installer will give you an estimate once they see the car and the steering wheel.

Can my usual garage install the NTech steering wheel?

Yes. The steering wheel is built around your original core and airbag, so any garage comfortable working with airbags and steering column electronics can fit it. You don't have to use one of our partner garages.

Does the installer need to reprogram anything?

In most cases, no reprogramming is needed since the original airbag, wiring harness and electronics are reused. Some setups with added buttons or heated function may need extra checks — see our guide on coding and adapters for the details that apply to your case.

What if the steering wheel doesn't match once I receive it?

Contact us right away through our contact page before any installation attempt. Every wheel goes through a contrôle avant départ relevé et daté before shipping, but if something looks off on arrival, we want to know before the garage touches it.

Where do I find the nearest installer?

Reach out to us with your location and we'll point you to the closest partner garage in our network of more than 100 garages, or confirm that your own mechanic is a good fit for the job.
