How to identify the right Audi generation
Within this range, compatibility depends first on the vehicle generation and the design of the original wheel. Between Q3 8U and Q3 F3, between Q5 8R and Q5 FY, or between Q7 4L and Q7 4M, the controls, airbag and spoke shape are not the same.
The same logic applies to the A6 and A7. An A6 C6-C7 does not use the same base as an A6 C8, and a recent A7 differs in its control architecture and trim details depending on the model year.
Some Q3, Q5, Q7 and Q8 versions also use the steering wheel from the 8Y generation depending on the model year. This is an important point to confirm before ordering, because it determines the starting base and the options that are genuinely compatible.
What changes between versions: controls, paddles, airbag and heating
From one generation to another, the layout of the multifunction controls changes. The button design, the shape of the side trims and the paddle profile can vary, so the starting base must match the vehicle exactly.
The original airbag kept remains a key part of the conversion. It is also necessary to account for the possible presence of heating, as well as the wiring and internal components specific to each version.
On some configurations, an Audi q7 steering wheel may look very similar at first glance while the interfaces are different. In practice, it is the combination of model year, trim level and original equipment that confirms the correct match.
What the custom build keeps and what you can change
The work is carried out on the original wheel base. This keeps the vehicle’s integration, the controls intended by Audi and the original airbag kept.
Personalisation then focuses on materials and shape. Forged carbon gives a more mineral look, woven carbon makes the weave more visible, Alcantara adds grip, Nappa brings suppleness, and perforated leather gives a more ventilated feel in the hands.
The outer profile, flat-bottom shape, centre marker, stitching colour and certain paddle finishes can be adapted depending on the compatible base. The aim is to stay consistent with the cabin and with the way the vehicle is used.
Fitting, care and workshop follow-up
Fitting should be entrusted to a professional. They check base compatibility, transfer the original components and carry out refitting in the right conditions for the vehicle’s equipment.
Before dispatch, each build receives a pre-dispatch check, recorded and dated. An SGS inspection is also mentioned, and the work carried out in our workshop is backed by a 5-year warranty.
For care, Alcantara benefits from simple and regular attention. Nappa and perforated leather respond well to gentle cleaning, while carbon sections should be cleaned with a clean non-aggressive cloth to preserve the surface finish.
