Understanding the differences between BMW 3 Series and 4 Series generations
Between E90 / E91 / E92 / E93, F30 / F31 / F34 / F32 / F36 and G20 / G21 / G22 / G23 / G26, the steering wheel layout changes depending on the model year. The hub shape, controls, paddle shifters and some options such as heating all need a careful check before production.
On F and G bases, equipment combinations are more varied. Depending on the original setup, the multifunction controls, paddle shifters and the airbag type used on the original steering wheel all need to be taken into account.
On E9x models, the approach stays the same: start from a compatible base and retain what needs to stay in place. This helps keep the result consistent with the equipment already fitted to the car.
What stays in place on your original BMW steering wheel base
The work is carried out on the original steering wheel base. Original airbag kept remains a central point, provided the base sent in is the correct one for the vehicle and its equipment.
The existing controls, the paddles when fitted, and the overall integration all depend on that base. That is why compatibility must always be read by model year and generation, not only by the model name.
Before dispatch, each build goes through a pre-dispatch check, recorded and dated. An SGS inspection is also part of our quality process.
Materials, grip and BMW-specific customisation
The choice of materials changes both the visual finish and the feel in hand. Woven carbon gives a regular weave pattern, while forged carbon has a more mineral and more contrasted appearance.
For the hand contact areas, Alcantara gives a matte and technical feel. Nappa has a softer grain, while perforated leather adds subtle texture and visual ventilation that suits some configurations particularly well.
Customisation can include a flat bottom, a 12 o’clock marker, a stitching colour or a specific thumb grip shape. The aim is to achieve a result that stays coherent with the BMW interior without breaking the original integration.
Fitting, care and long-term follow-up
Fitting should be handled by a professional. This allows the refitting, control connections and correct reinstallation of the original parts to be checked according to the vehicle.
For care, Alcantara needs gentle and regular cleaning. Nappa and perforated leather should be maintained with suitable products, used without excess, so the feel and appearance are preserved over time.
Our workshop works to order, with a 5-year warranty. More than 3,000 steering wheels made since 2014 and a 4.8/5 rating on more than 1,300 reviews give a concrete view of production consistency.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my steering wheel is compatible for the model year?
Compatibility depends on the generation, the model year and the original equipment fitted to the car. The relevant base needs to be checked before production starts.
Is the airbag replaced?
No. Original airbag kept is part of the fitting principle. The work is carried out on the compatible original steering wheel base.
Do I need a professional for fitting?
Yes, professional fitting is recommended. It allows the refitting and the connections to be checked according to the vehicle equipment.
What care does Alcantara and leather need?
Gentle and regular care is enough in most cases. Suitable products should be used for Alcantara, Nappa or perforated leather depending on the chosen finish.
I am looking for a BMW g20 steering wheel, where does the compatibility check start?
The check starts with the correct generation, then the model year and the equipment present on the original steering wheel. That is the most reliable basis for guiding the configuration.
