Mercedes AMG steering wheel compatibility by generation
From one Mercedes AMG steering wheel to another, the main differences often come down to the onboard electronics and the structure of the original base. Depending on the generation, the controls, paddles, spoke shape, presence of heating and airbag design require a specific compatible base.
On W176, W205, C117 and X156 assemblies, the control and paddle layout does not use the same components as later generations. W177, C118, H247, X253 and W167 assemblies, followed by W206, W223, X254 and R232, each have their own variants, with visible differences in the buttons, centre surround and certain features depending on the model year.
For a C63 steering wheel, compatibility depends as much on the model designation as on the generation itself. That is why selection is made by precise base, so the correct original components are retained during assembly.
What custom work keeps from the original base
The work is carried out on the original wheel base. This keeps the integration with the vehicle, the interfaces intended by the manufacturer and the original airbag kept.
The controls, paddles and functions present on the compatible base remain linked to that base. Where heating is present on the original assembly, it must be considered during the compatibility check, because the internal construction is not the same across versions.
Before dispatch, each assembly receives a pre-dispatch check, recorded and dated. An SGS inspection is also referenced for manufacturing quality follow-up.
Materials, grip and finishes suited to Mercedes-AMG
The choice of materials changes both the feel in hand and the visual balance of the cabin. Forged carbon gives a more mineral and contrasted surface, while woven carbon offers a more regular and graphic pattern.
For the hand contact areas, Alcantara gives a clear grip, especially in more dynamic use. Nappa offers a softer feel, while perforated leather balances hold in the hands with easier day-to-day care depending on use.
The specification can include a 12 o’clock marker, tonal or contrasting stitching, a more defined flat-bottom shape, as well as adaptation around the paddles according to the base selected. The aim is to keep consistency with the Mercedes-AMG interior rather than add unnecessary effects.
Fitting, care and long-term follow-up
Fitting should be entrusted to a professional. This is the right way to remove and refit the assembly cleanly, check base compatibility and preserve the operation of the original parts that are retained.
In daily use, care mostly depends on the material selected. Alcantara needs gentle, regular cleaning, while Nappa and perforated leather respond well to simple care with suitable products, without overloading the surface. Carbon sections should be cleaned with a clean, non-abrasive cloth.
Made to order in our workshop means each detail can be configured online. Long-term follow-up is backed by a 5-year warranty on workmanship.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my Mercedes-AMG model year is compatible?
Compatibility is checked by generation, model and original base. If you are unsure between versions, compare the shape of the wheel, the controls and the airbag depending on the model year.
Is the airbag replaced?
No. The original airbag kept is part of the process of rebuilding the existing base. Compatibility still needs to be confirmed on the correct base.
How long should I allow for a custom Mercedes AMG steering wheel?
It is made to order in our workshop after the configuration has been confirmed. The time required depends on the base and the finishes selected.
Should fitting be done by a professional?
Yes, professional fitting is recommended. It allows the original components to be handled properly and the assembly to be refitted correctly.
How do I care for Alcantara, leather and carbon?
Alcantara should be cleaned gently and regularly. Nappa leather, perforated leather and carbon require suitable products and simple care, without excess.
